🪴 The Best Low-Maintenance Plants for Beginners
When you are first starting out, you want plants that are resilient, forgiving, and highly adaptable to typical indoor conditions. These three exceptional varieties are perfect for beginners and are regularly available in our curated indoor plant collection at Jayla’s Flowers:
💧 The 3 Golden Rules of Indoor Plant Care
Once you have selected your new green companion, keeping it alive comes down to three basic elements: water, light, and a little bit of physical maintenance.
- The Finger Test: Never water on a strict calendar schedule. Instead, push your index finger about two inches into the soil. If it feels wet or damp, wait a few days and check again. If it feels dry and dusty, it is time to water.
- Drainage is Key: Always ensure your pots have drainage holes at the bottom so excess water can escape. If you fall in love with a decorative ceramic pot that lacks holes, keep your plant in its plastic nursery pot and slip that inside the decorative container.
- Bright, Indirect Light: This means a spot that is highly illuminated but where the harsh, direct rays of the sun do not directly hit the leaves (which can cause sunburn). A few feet away from an east or west-facing window is usually ideal.
- Low Light: This means areas further away from windows, or rooms with north-facing windows that receive minimal natural sun. Stick to hardy varieties like Snake Plants or ZZ Plants for these dimmer spots.
